Another very imposing structure as you first glimpse the impressive castle, home and seat of the Vane family, the Barons Barnard, from the main road. These wealthy folk knew how to make an impression on those lesser mortals and, probably on some of the well heeled also. A privately owned building, which despite the fact that we had to pay to gain entry, we did with little qualm, based on the recommendation of fellow Waggoners, who had already made the visit. A grand building with an equally grand interior, much repaired, renovated and altered over the years; aren't they all. Built in the medieval period between the years 1367 - 1390 by John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville of Raby. One major alteration involved raising the roof of the entrance hall, to allow carraiges to be driven through. This equally entailed the raising of the great hall floor by several feet, along with alterations to the adjoining rooms and passageways. One room, the quadrangal, as undergone recent and extensive work, to bring it back to its original condition. A fine example of restoration.
