Another interesting Yorkshire town, packed, with its own particular points of interest, in the buildings, the castle, and character of the town. We spent a number of days in the town, not just because it was the nearest to our site, handy as it was for shopping, but mainly for the interesting Market cross and the large impressive castle which, dominated our initial view, as we approached the town. Above: Barnard Castle as seen from inside the battlement walls. These views are of the inner ward, the location of the main accomodation, the great hall, the kitchens, and, presumably the nobilities sleeping quarters. Above: A view from the outer battlements and the approach road that we used from the caravan site. This was the view, but in the reverse direction, that we saw every time we came into Barnard Castle, as we crossed the bridge. Little did we know the scale of the castle that lay behind these battlements. Above: The structure around which a roundabout has been created. Not litterally, one assumes that the Market Cross was always at the junction of the two roads, even in years past. Sadly, little appears to have been made of the historic importance of the building, for the public to access the structure, as we were able to do at the smaller, but still interesting, version when in Wymondham. Having said that, such involvement by the public, may be thwarted by the danger in crossing the roads to access the building which, wasn't such a problem in Wymonham.
