Above: The White Tower, completed around the year 1100, built on the instructions of William the Conqueror, to show his power and control over the defeated English. Built on land, close to the river, thought originally, to have been part of a Roman settlement or encampment, showing the strategic importance of the area in controlling progress on the river as much as on land. The area occupied by the Tower has changed over the years, once being entirely surrounded by water, with its levels of defences, strengthened and oft put to test by fractious Londoners and other enemies of the state.
