We took a trip on the Mid Norfolk railway to a location called Wymondham which, according to the internet had an interesting Abbey. Our trip down the line from Dereham was once again courtesy of a Deisel Multiple Unit (DMU for short) and did take us, not just to the town of Wymondham, but also to the very interesting Abbey. In fact you arrive at the Abbey station, with the very impressive Abbey in view as you alight the train. You reach the town either by making use of the path through the Abbey or via the country lane which runs parallel. With such an impressive building we couldn't resist visiting the Abbey before the town and, once more on the way back to catch our train. Once a monastery, whose buildings sufferred under the orders of Henry 8th, he did however spare the Abbey structure, which remains very much intact today and, with some modern but complimentary additions. We spent a considerable time looking around the Abbey, taking pictures and admiring the intricacies of the building, especially the impressive altar screen and the ceiling. Only a short walk into the town centre, where opposite the old corn exchange we sat and had a very nice lunch. Not a lot to see in the town, other than the corn exchange building, so we decided to meander our way back to the station, with the inevitable detour back through the Abbey grounds to take yet more pictures.
