Above:A late 12th Century fortification, operated by English Heritage which has undergone recent extensive improvements. A place that I last visited with a school party from Arnold Hill School, on a three day trip to the area, back in the early 80's. Despite destruction over the years of internal structures, the curtain wall and battlements remains an impressive, and a daunting structure to invaders years past, standing as the castle does on a mound surrounded in those days by motte and water. The red brick building is a recent construction, mid 18th century and was used as a poor house, and later as a Parish hall, luckilly much of this has survived.
